What you need to know
The driving process can be confusing for parents and students so this is the basic information on the Graduated Licensing System GLS.
In short there are 3 boxes that need to be ticked to obtain a provisional license in South Australia.
1. You need to be 17 and or on your Learners or Ls for 12 months
2. You need a Certificate of Competency
3. You need 75 hours of supervised driving
The section that has the confusion is the Certificate of Competency.
The Certificate of Competency is issued to the Lerner Driver when they have ether completed their VORT (Vehicle On Road Test)
or have completed all 28 tasks and the 2 test of the
Competency Based Training (CBT) in the yellow section of the Drivers Companion (Log Book)
So what is the difference between VORT and CBT&A, before I explain the difference let me clear the myth behind VORT and CBT&A you dont need to have your 75 hours completed before you can get your Certificate, it can be done at any time.
CBT&A. Competency Based Training And Assessment. In the yellow section of the Drivers Companion you will find the CBT&A section, it is a collection of 28 tasks and 2 assessments that have to be performed by the Learner Driver to the satisfaction of the Driving Instructor then signed off. This can be a very lengthy process requiring many lessons depending on the aptitude of the Learner Driver.
VORT. Vehicle On Road Test. Is a one of test performed by a Authorised Driving Instructor this is a 45 min drive consisting all 5 slow speed manoeuvres and the Learners ability to obey road law and drive in a safe manner. With VORT the Learner can attempt it whenever they feel they are ready however it is very unlikely they will pass without professional driver training .
What can we do to help and why are we so successful.
We prefer the VORT approach to driver training, we feel this is a more accurate measure of the Learners readiness to drive unassisted;
Our greatest success is achieved with early intervention.
We have found that if we start training before the Supervising Driver we can then help both the Learner and the Supervising Driver
achieve a higher level of driving experience in a shorter period of time.
This approach is often better for the Learner and the Supervising Driver
as we do all the scary stuff, this eliminates a lot of the anexiety and stress from those important first hours of driving.
Building a better relationship between the Supervising Driver and The Learner.
The RADskills NORT 2 VORT course is a 12 hour course over 6 lessons, the first 4 lessons are conducted with in a 2 week period, 3 lessons are just the instructor and the student then the 4th lesson is with the Supervising Driver in the car also. This is to help the Supervising Driver understand the manoeuvres required to be practiced, and the systems that have been presented to the Learner Driver. It also has the added bonus of introducing the Supervising driver to control techniques used by instructors to guide the Learner Driver. The final 2 lessons are conducted over 4 weeks with the Supervising Driver attending before the Learner driver sits the VORT.
On average within 30 hours total (12 hrs Professional Training and 18 hrs Supervised Driving) our learner drivers are well prepared for the VORT.
The remaining 45 hours and 10 months to obtain the Provisional Licence to be completed.
Feedback from parents is very positive as they have had very little or no stress during the whole training process, and our drivers are both safe and competent from a very early stage.
